Prostate Cancer and the Propensity to Metastasize to Bone

Prostate Cancer and the Propensity to Metastasize to Bone

More than any other cancer, prostate cancer has an overwhelming propensity to metastasize to bone, and prostate cancer with bone metastasis is incurable. We are focusing on the role that the bone environment plays in the development of bone metastasis. Bone undergoes a normal, ongoing remodeling process in which old bone is destroyed and new bone is laid down. We will study whether men with a more active bone remodeling process are at greater risk of developing metastatic disease, with the hypothesis that these men have a more active bone environment that is more likely to support growth of tumor cells.
