Irene Shui enjoys being an Irish Rose Travel Fellow
April 18, 2013

Irene Shui, a
post-doctoral research fellow in the Cancer Epidemiology Group at HSPH,
recently traveled to the Emerald Island supported by the Rose Travelling
Fellowship Program in Chronic Disease Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Irene’s Rose
Travel Fellowship is based at Trinity
College Dublin under the mentorship of Dr. Stephen Finn and has three main
objectives: to gain exposure to prostate pathology and laboratory techniques,
facilitate collaboration with the Prostate Cancer Research Consortium in
Ireland on the collection of lifestyle exposure data, and organize a short
course on patho-epidemiology that she will co-instruct in June at Trinity College Dublin. While in
Ireland, Irene found the in-person interactions with her Irish counterparts to
be a wonderful experience. It allowed her to build personal relationships with
her collaborators, enhanced the interactive thought-process within the group,
and made it easier to plan future work. Additionally, learning first-hand about
the microRNA assay technique in the laboratory, the prostate pathology, and the
clinical management of prostate cancer patients was especially valuable with respect to her trans-disciplinary research focus. Irene
is eagerly anticipating her return to Ireland in June 2013, as the Irish lived
up to their reputation of gracious hospitality.
